| I'd really like to know everyone's thoughts about Barack Obama's and John McCain's types. I feel like this is a pretty important question considering the magnitude of the coming elections in America. Let me start off this discussion by saying that I believe that Obama is ENFP (although in some photos, he seems to resemble INTP from visual ID). And I see John McCain as ESTJ. Would appreciate your feedback. Thanks. -- Doug |

A27 My guess for Obama is either ENFP or ENFJ but, I'm having trouble with the P/J for him. Hmmm...I guess it'll be easier now that he's gonna be Prez 'cuz he'll be all over the t.v. even more & we'll get a better feel for him!  -- Anonymous |
| A28 @A25, ENFPs are great orators too. In Obama's speeches, he puts lots of emotions, abstractions, possibilities and a push for a change for the better, which is very much an ENFP's trait. -- Anonymous |

| A31 Since I started this thread, I've been giving this a lot of thought. I thought it was interesting that so many people thought Obama was ENFJ, and why I just couldn't see it. And then the other day, I had an epiphany of sorts. Is it possible that Obama is actually INFJ? This would keep him in the Delta Quadrant, where I really feel he belongs, and I've read a few different places that he really is quite a private guy. Possible Introvert INFJ? | A32 Obama is definitely not INFj or Delta, Fe preference is obvious. Also, his staff is comprised of mostly Beta's -- An INFj |
| A33 Who in Obama´s staff is a beta? I see both Joe Biden and David Axelrod as being INFJ, and his wife as being ESTJ. Hillary Clinton I see as being INTJ, and thus an alpha. And I think he had to hire her as secretary of state to appease her supporters. I am interested in who you think is a beta among his staff and close contacts. -- Ayahuasca |
| A34 INFj's are not "smiley" people (despite the celeb pictures listed as INFj, who are not all correctly typed), we simply cannot display our physical emotions as freely as ENFj's and other Fe types. INFj's are also not good at rallying people, that's Fe, again. Both Obama and Biden are very emotionally reactant people, even their voices are. They're also clearly talented at exciting people (Fe>Fi) and bringing them together, the whole "Yes We Can" slogan is primary Beta>Delta; focuses on the group rather than the individual. Hillary is likely ISTj (duality), she seems skilled in Se and hasn't displayed any sign of having creative Ne -- An INFj |
A35 Many of Obama's more rousing campaign speeches contained references to the poignancy and significance of the moment and to the exhilaration and passion and it produced both on an individual level and through a collective spirit of a people locked in a fervent struggle to cast off the shackles of the past. | A38 Also, I wanted to add that Obama´s role model and favorite president was Abraham Lincoln (who happens to be INFJ according to various websites). Coincidence? I don´t think Obama can possibly be ENFJ, because I am an ENFP, and can´t typically understand the speech patterns of ENFJ individuals such as Tony Blair, Oprah, and Chris Dodd. After they speak, I´m left feeling like...huh? what did they just say? But I can understand Obama perfectly well. Any other ENFP´s out there have a problem understanding ENFJ´s when they speak, but yet easily understand Obama? I have a feeling I´m not the only one. Also, would anyone argue with me that Mrs. Obama is ESTJ? If this is so, I can´t imagine an ESTJ hooking up with anyone in Beta. -- Ayahuasca |

| A40 A37, I agree with this point to an extent; however, I feel that the fact that these quintessential and themes were dominant transmission of his campaign and that he was able to convey this message convincingly and successfully may be significant, as it suggests some sort of alignment and concord between the IM product and the IM type. (About Lincoln... he enjoys widespread popularity to this day and is consistently ranked as the greatest president the U.S. has ever had, both by the general public and presidential scholars. Were Obama to lavish extravagant praise on say, Warren G. Harding, on the other hand, THAT might worth pondering over. ) -- A35 again |
| A41 A38, being able to understand a speaker in an opposing quadra doesn't mean they have to be in your quadra. Nor does admiring someone in a different quadra change your type. I personally don't know very many people, from any quadra, who dislike Lincoln, and yes I agree he was likely an INFj, which goes to show the clear difference in demeanor to an Se valuer like Obama; Lincoln depended on others to be the aggressive force during his leadership since he was so passive, he eventually made an ISTp his vice president. Obama is anything but passive, he knows how to rally people and garner an emotional reaction from them. Obama's wife is most likely a Beta ST, just looking at her intimidates me, she doesn't possess that Si down-to-earth appearance at all, she seems like a clearly aggressive woman. I have no strong opinion, either way, of Obama so I'm basing his typing purely on how he comes across as an individual, and I'm not seeing an identical at all, nothing he's presented has shown strong FiNe or TeSi valuing. Everything he's said and stood for correlates perfectly with Beta values and FeNi -- An INFj |
| A42 Alright A41, so which beta hidden agenda is Obama`s? You seem quite sure what he`s not, but then what beta type is he? From all I`ve read about Obama, he`s a real health nut, which would fit quite nicely in with the INFJ hidden agenda `to be healthy`. He`s always going to the gym to work out, playing basketball, and consuming lots of health food style teas and powerbars. What type of beta could he be? An ENFJ? So in what way is his hidden agenda `to be wealthy` manifested? I`ve seen none of the money obsessed behaviour from him that I`ve come to associate with my ENTJ and ENFJ friends. -- Ayahuasca |
| A43 "Hidden Agenda" isn't an accurate method for typing. Any of the so called agendas can be applied to any of the types depending on various circumstances. For instance, a famous person or someone who lives in an urban city is more likely to maintain a healthy appearance due to the degree of scrutiny and competition that they face. There really is any number of reasons a person can fit the "agendas" that have nothing to do with type. From conversing with other INFj's I don't even see a connection between our type and a strong drive for physical health...emotional and spiritual health? Definitely -- An INFj |
| A44 John McCain - INFj (with well developed Ti, too); Barack Obama - ENTj-Ni; Michelle Obama - ENFj or ENTj; Sara Palin - ENTp; Joe Biden - ISFj-Se. Obama is the same type as: Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Ed Speelers, and my father. McCain is the same type as: Henry Winkler, Alice Cooper, Ralph Fiennes. | A47 I think A44 may be falling victim to the strange phenomenon of ´opposite typing´. Many people have typed McCain as ESTP, and I am very much in agreement. His similarities to Bush go further than just policy beliefs. Their personalities are alarmingly similar as well. With primary Se, they both share the trait of action before thinking. When there is a problem, they both act out, much of the time prematurely, pressured by Se to ´do something´. A good example of this was McCain´s ´suspension of the campaign´ during the financial crisis, in which he ´rushed off´ to Washington, and ended up not helping the situation much if at all. Sarah Palin is an ESFJ, like Bill Clinton, another ´everyman´, whose appeal lies in their primary function of Fe. They feel to the masses like people ´they could know in their own lives´. Perfect example of strong Fe. While ISFJ is a good guess for Biden, I´ll take it one step further typing both he and Obama as INFJ. I also believe Obama´s closest friend, confidant, and chief strategist David Axelrod is INFJ. Mrs. Obama, I believe to be a strong ESTJ, and this is the reason many see her as Obama´s ´director´. Her primary Te is quite intimidating to many people. Folks, I believe we´ve just witnessed in the last election a ´Delta takeover´, and that´s just fine with me as an ENFP. One more thing-I think the choice of an INFJ in Obama was a gut reaction of the American people against his conflicting relation-ESTP George Bush. -- Ayahuasca |
| A48 Obama- Beta NF, David Axelrod- ISTj, Joe Biden- ENFj, John McCain- ISFj, Sarah Palin- ESFp, George W. Bush- ENFj. This was not a Delta vs. Beta election, it was Beta vs. Gamma. Delta's don't talk about "change" and use terms like "we" or "us" in elections, this is primarily a Beta belief system, that an ideal should be pushed upon the the public, in other words, a group mentality where the majorities needs should override the minorities. Delta's splinter off from groups, which would explain why you'll likely never see a "Delta party". Another point about Obama not being INFj is to compare him to other Ij politicians like Al Gore; Ij's are monotonous and lack excitability with their presence, this is the opposite of the charismatic, passionate, Obama, who clearly possesses strong Fe. -- An INFj |
