What is the reasoning behind the choice of function shapes? That is, why the triangle, circle, square and angle? Is there more behind the shapes than practicality alone? -- Anonymous |

A1 The square, triangle and the circle are the most basic and the most recognisable shapes, which at the same time are very different from each other (with the L shape being the odd one out). If there is another reason for using these shapes, then it probably because the circle could signify the space around, triangle reminds of a pyramid, which is an important spiritual symbol, square is too rigid and straightforward - just like logic. The L shape is almost like a square with a bit missing, hinting that ethics is almost like logic but not quite, which is kind of true. -- Admin |
A2 Historically the shapes are those chosen by Augusta when she first started developing socionics. I don't believe they have any mystical significance necessarily, I could be wrong about that. Nevertheless, it is possible to represent each of the sixteen types uniquely using only two of the eight symbols from this set, making the four letter code needlessly over specific. -- metroGnome, the ostensible INTj |
