Default typing children and pre-adolescents

How do we type children? As I see it, taking a test would involve having some kind of an idea of who we are and what our likes and dis-likes are. In the case of adolescents from a troubled background this may lead to an incorrect understanding of one's type.
How can we understand their type as some obvious indicators of preferences may change or disappear over time?

Very young children? Would be mainly just a guesswork.
3+ already exhibit some type related traits.
Also it is kinda general consensus that type fully forms by the age of 5 so 5+ would already show quite stable and recognisable type preferences.

But the answer to your question is by observation mainly.

That's interesting, is there any studies confirming a certain age for a personality to be determined?
