typing children and pre-adolescents

hello all
How do we type children? As I see it, taking a test would involve having some kind of an idea of who we are and what our likes and dis-likes are. In the case of adolescents from a troubled background this may lead to an incorrect understanding of one's type.
How can we understand their type as some obvious indicators of preferences may change or disappear over time?

Re: typing children and pre-adolescents

I've found that some children exhibit very strong preferences early on, while others may be difficult to place. I personally doubt one can provide accurate testing for a child until at least age 3 or 4.
Direct observation over a specific period in unfamiliar and familiar settings of social interaction, play, and preferred modes of expression would probably be the best approach for typing children. It might also help to know the types of the parents and caretakers, so as to assess their interaction with the child and perhaps determine whether or not the relations fit socionics type relations.
