A1 No chance. Personality is not your upbringing, schooling etc. although all that can have an effect. Personality comes from inner self. Personality is what makes people different. Even twins have different personalities. -- Anonymous
A2 Personality is a vague terminology as coming from within, and twins with different types have different personalities-meaning 2. it is not genetic, and 1. not the by-product of enviro factors, what therefore is the cause? Re the twins - I do not know what the stats are on identical twins with the same type, i would suspect them to be more similar. -- Anonymous
A3 If you must peg personality into a hole, then look at astrology. IMO personality has more to do with astrology than anything else, even the type. Some may want to quickly slag this notion off, I would understand, but please, at least propose an alternative to 'what is the cause?'. -- C3PO
A4 Everything happens for a reason I would surmise, so I'm not sure what you mean by an alternative to 'what is the cause' also what is IMO? -- Anonymous
A5 @A3: Their life, genes, food, hormones etc. If I objectively look at the astrological descriptions I'm closest to scorpion, and I'm gemini. I have 4 relatives that have birthday within the same week, they all have the same astrological sign. All of them have different personality types, and all of them have entirely different personalities. Astrology is BS. -- Palpatine
A6 Not sure how socionics changes the assumptions, but when I took a class on MBTI, they had a theory that the letters develop from left to right. So, you're born I or E, you learn to observe the world by broad or precise strokes in the first few years (N or S), then you learn to interact according to your first inclination/emotional response or your subsequent decisions (F or T), and finally you develop your tendency to rely on perceived structures or to try to create your own systems even when it breaks the rules (j or p). These descriptions are very limited & only meant as examples ... plus, I'm not sure I agree with the order of development. But theories abound, and it's always good to consider alternate perspectives if only to challenge your assumptions. Another aspect to this debate is whether type is set in stone once formed or if intention can alter your balance. Ideally, you should find your type in order to understand your nature and become more comfortable acting according to it - and to raise your awareness of how you can develop skills in acting against your preferences when circumstances dictate. To bring it back to the original question, I think people will always differentiate. The urban myths of identical twins separated at birth having wives with the same names, dogs of the same breed, the same model car, etc. may have happened here & there, but that doesn't necessarily mean their personalities mirror each other! Furthermore, while two individuals with the same four letters may tend to react internally in similar ways to similar circumstances, every one of us has learned to inhibit aspects of our behavior according to our upbringing both in specific (our home life) and in general (our culture, generation, etc) ... therefore, two ISTps might ACT quite different from each other, even though they'll probably have the same reasons for choosing their outer reaction! -- iAnnAu
