Category: Theory Typing Intertype Relations
Is there a relationship between psychological type and open-mindedness? Are certain types more likely to oppose anything that goes against tradition, the opinions they grew up with and their religious beliefs, and other types more likely to be accepting and supportive of change, new ideas and different opinions? Are certain types more likely to support prostitution, euthanasia, marijuana legalization, gay marriage, abortion, etc.? Or are they completely unrelated? -- kookoomber

A1 You can't just lump all that stuff together. If you look at a type's hidden agenda, it becomes more obvious. For example, an ISTJ and an ISFJ will likely be more concerned with religious matters because their hidden agenda is to believe. It is hard for them to believe in something so abstract without the use of traditional methods which have been pre-fabricated by other people. If they see it, they'll probably believe it. -- playing the hidden agenda card
A2 The Big 5 measures a dimension called "openness", which is supposed to correlate with the S/N dimension. Roughly speaking, more openness = more N. I myself think Socionics J/P also has to do with it. MBTI J/P relates more to the Conscientiousness scale in the Big 5. -- pm (ENFp)
A3 Definition of Open-mindedness: - Open-mindedness is the willingness to search actively for evidence against one’s favored beliefs, plans, or goals, and to weigh such evidence fairly when it is available. -Being open-minded does not imply that one is indecisive, wishy-washy, or incapable of thinking for one’s self. After considering various alternatives, an open-minded person can take a firm stand on a position and act accordingly. - The opposite of open-mindedness is what is called the myside bias which refers to the pervasive tendency to search for evidence and evaluate evidence in a way that favors your initial beliefs. Most people show myside bias, but some are more biased than others. There r close-minded and open-minded people on both sides of the fence regardless of the disputed issue whether it be prostitution, euthanasia, marijuana legalization, gay marriage, abortion, etc. What determines a person's open-mindedness is the HOW of reaching their particular position. -- Anonymous
