Category: Advice Typing
I score variously as an INTP & as an INTJ. I've read Sergei Ganin's articles but still find myself in both types. How do I find out which type i belong to? -- Anusha

A1 Hi, I had similar problems to you. At first, I scored a lot as an INTJ, because I believed that keeping a structured life was the best way to do things. Not because I preferred it, but as I read INTJ and INTP profiles, I realized that while the INTJ profile sounded a lot like me, the INTP sounded more like me. I'm guessing you are probably around 50/50 on the P/J scale. I'd say, try to look at the Judging and Perceiving prefrences only and see which one fits you more. Because the INTJ and INTP personality types are overall very similar (love knowledge, prefer to spend time alone, have a dark sense of humor, etc.) You probably have a mixture of P & J prefrences, but really think about which side resembles you more. Or.. if you find yourself deciding very quickly (INTJ), but if you find yourself still wallowing with indecisiveness (INTP)!! -- D the B
A2 Here's the tie-breaker for me. Do you find yourself or other people complaining that you don't finish your sentences? Then you're most likely an INTp. Both types make big intuitive leaps in their logic (and yet manage to come across to others and themselves as being logical!). But INTj's at least bother finishing their sentences (and then believe they've made a bulletproof argument for doing so!). -- Andre - INTj
A3 Hi, The advice others have given so far seems sound but there are other things you can do to verify your type. 1. If you know the types of others then observe your interactions with them. For example, if you seem to be able to naturally communicate with someone who is ENTj (such a person is probably your mirror type) then you are INTp. 2. Knowing your quadra will help. A quadra is a group composed of mirrors and their respective duals (4 types). The members of a quadra are attracted to each other because of shared interest and common behavior. INTj, ENTp, ESFj, ISFp form the Alpha quadra. The alpha quadra seeks novelty. INTp, ENTj, ESFp, ISFj form the Gamma quadra. The gamma quadra seeks commerce and technology. 3. Sometimes you can tell your type from your hidden agenda. The hidden agenda is the psychological function with which you are most insecure. An INTj's hidden agenda is . This commonly manifests itself in a desire to be neat, tidy, comfortable, or healthy. An INTp's hidden agenda is , which manifests itself in the desire to be loved, to live in an utopian world, etc. 4. You can tell from the way that you argue. INTj's lay out 'the facts' in very organized fashion, and at the end reach a conclusion that is indisputable (from their own point of view). An INTp's favorite phrase is "On the other hand..." INTp's usually wonder if considering just one more possibility will change the outcome of a situation. -- A quasi anonymous INTj
A4 I find that INTj have a tendency bite their tongues even about something that doesn't make logical sense especially if there is nothing to be gained by opposing the nonsense, whereas INTp seem to never hold back. INTp also seem to be idealistic enough to have as their motto “ignore the torpedoes, full speed ahead”. The INTj before proceeding must first be convinced that they will succeed and secondly that they will be perceived as being competent. Once started, they will not hesitate, and they will obsess about finishing unlike the INTp. However, an INTp may stand on a soapbox to educate the masses but not an INTj. -- I/O
A5 One easy way to tell the difference, is the way you laugh. When you are relaxed with your friends or something. If you laugh in a very restrained manner, or just smile at jokes, you are an INTj. If you laugh in a uncontrolled manner, like a child does, you are an INTp. INTp's can crack up at their own jokes, so that it becomes difficult to finnish the joke. Of course INTp's can be more restrained in some situations. But this is when you are comfortable. This has to do with the weak Fe, but as it's in different "slots", it manifests differently. Typing based on estimations on how you think, are problematic. I even think that it's possible that NT's can think alike to some other NT type, it might not be even that difficult. And one could do it on regular basis. It's just more likely to be irritating, or feel somehow "wrong". -- INTp
A6 One easy way to tell the difference, is the way you fart. When you are relaxed with your friends or something. If you fart in a very restrained manner, or just hold it in, you are an INTj. If you fart in a uncontrolled manner, crapping in your pants in the process, you are an INTp. -- Dr. Zoidberg
A7 As... unorthodox as that sounds, Zoidberg's right. INTjs have a hidden agenda of Si, meaning that they're very self-conscious about things such as farting and burping. They hate drawing attention to things like that. If they could have it their way, they'd be some sort of flatulence ninja. -- INTj
A8 "unorthodox as that sounds, Zoidberg's right." Nah, it's just shows the higest level of conversation, that Zoidberg is capable of. INTp's are just as timid in that manner. -- Anonymous
A9 "Nah, it's just shows the higest level of conversation, that Zoidberg is capable of." Nah, it just looks like a pretty funny sarcastic remark to a pretty stupid statement. -- Dr. Zoidberg
A10 @A9: As you are the expert of making stupid statements. So we must all believe in your authority over this, you being "doctor" and everything. And somehow you have also managed to confuse lame with funny. To improve your sense of humor, maybe you should just go back to watch those cartoons, sonny. And to why it's not stupid: 1) It's related to the differences in the overall moods of INTp's and INTj's. And to the difference of having Fe as PoLR or dual-seeking function. When Fe is as PoLR, the person has poor control over it. And when Fe is as dual-seeking function, it makes the person uncertain how to express their mood. 2) Anyone who knows both INTp's and INTj's can verify this. 3) It's very easy to detect, compared to advices above. Some of them being very vague, unpractical or things that you probably never will encounter. -- Ensi-Lugal
A11 @A10 Do you think just because you sign every post differently it would look like there is an army of stupid posters invading this question and so you won't be singled out? Dr. Zoidberg is a cartoon character you're idiot! And only an idiot like you can make a statement that there is a correlation between how someone laughs and their type and then try to logically argue its validity -- Dr. Zoidberg

I'd appreciate if you keep flaming to a minimum
A12 At risk of entering the fray (I think all of the posts including A10's are intelligent, even if a few are crude), I wondered if a j-p difference and not necessarily INTj-INTp difference is how something like that is handled. For example, I try to be discreet when I blow my nose but I've observed p's are less conscious of this (blowing their nose at the dinner table or so on oblivious to whether they're being disgusting or how they're doing so). -- econdude

A13 "Dr. Zoidberg is a cartoon character" Oh, really?! I'm almost as suprised as I'm scared of being singled out. @A12:"For example, I try to be discreet when I blow my nose but I've observed p's are less conscious of this (blowing their nose at the dinner table or so on oblivious to whether they're being disgusting or how they're doing so)." That's also an interesting observation. That holds true for me, actually I pay more attention to not to waste the area of the tissue (INTp cost effectiveness). Anyway I haven't paid much attention to what other people do when they blow their noses, to speculate it's validity in general. -- Ensi-Lugal (5, 8, 10)
A14 A13 that's hilarious (not wasting tissue). That shows the INTp detail-orientedness inside of an often amazing intuitive understanding of the "big picture." I certainly didn't mean to imply p's are disgusting...often, as I said, a p is less likely to think that they are doing something that might be a tad impolite. Of course, many p's are quite sensitive to other people doing something they don't like. In short, all of us are human. But I did notice that kind of difference between the j-p divide. -- econdude
A15 INTP's are geeks. The guys in Star Wars costumes waiting in line for days at the premier of of Revenge of the Sith... The INTJ's were the guys making fun of them. Google "Triumph the insult comic dog at star wars" if you're still confused. INTJ's are edgy, iconoclastic, rebel system thinkers w/ iNtuitive minds like switchblades (i.e. they see through BS like nobody's business). George Carlin and Dennis Miller are excellent examples. Also Pacino and De Niro's characters in the film Heat. As well as Snape and Tom Riddle from Harry Potter. (p.s. - Don't ever insult an INTJ, they will verbally drop kick your cosmic Teddy bear into a low earth orbit for you;-) -- Hybrid
