I have become quite intrigued with the theory of personality types. However, whenever I take tests, I seem to come out either an ENTP or ENTJ. The 'ENT' portion is pretty consistent, but the J & P go back and forth with each other! I have read descriptions for both and honestly see a lot of me in each one. I am very neat and meticulous, but hate anything that imposes on my freedom of choice, movement, etc. I know it may not be good to pigeonhole myself into one type, but are there any major differences between the ENTP and ENTJ that would help me determine which one is more my type?? Lastly, are there ways to determine vocational paths that cater to my strengths as a particular type? Thanks for the help!! -- Damian |

A1 Learn the differences between the different functions that make up the ENTj and ENTp. Functionally they are completely different beasts and as you become more familiar between the distinctions it should be obvious whether you are more J or P. Just for reference (model A): ENTp - Ne Ti Se Fi Si Fe Ni Te, ENTj - Te Ni Fe Si Fi Se Ti Ne -- ptl

In my opinion, although incorporating type theory is useful in gaining inter and intra personal knowledge, I believe one is certainly capable of being more, in a particular existential situation, than a collection of tendencies. The idea of self actualization (Maslow) presupposes as we gain life experience and become more open, less rigid in our patterns of thought and behavior, we become more than what we are at present, or self acutalized. Perhaps this might explain your "portable J" to transcending your "type" to become a more fully functioning (Rogers) person. I myself am definitely an ENFP but i have developed my "J" side and keep meticulous business records although most type desciptions say ENFP's are not neat or organized. However, due to my tendency toward global thinking, worry & my orientation towards the future I fear the IRS and voila'-my type tendencies are overcome!. My routine procedures/schedules would give a type observer the idea I had/was? a "J" for sure. Type theory is a useful tool but we are capapble of so much more. Just some observations... -- debz |
A3 According to Jung judging refers to a person whose predominant psychological function is rational, i.e. either thinking or feeling. Likewise to Jung perceiving implies that the predominant function is "irrational," i.e. either sensation or intuition. Myers-Briggs morphed Jung's meaning unfortunately into implying that judging means that a person's preferred rational function, thinking or feeling, is extraverted regardless of whether the person is an extravert or an introvert. As an extraverted thinker (ENT) you are having difficulty distinguishing whether you use extraverted thinking (Te) or introverted thinking (Ti) more. Te is dominant in ENTJs; and Ti is dominant in ENTPs. Te categorizes and organizes the facts of one's external world. Ti seeks an understanding of the principles by which one's inner world works. -- metroGnome, the ostensible INTj |

A4 socionist.blogspot.com has "socionics basics" that are really helpful in distinguishing the white square from the black box, and the two triangles from each other. There is also a good article about INTp vs. INTj on this website that helps in distinguishing these functions (albeit in an introverted context). I would suggest based on what you wrote that you're an ENTp, but it doesn't matter what I think until you discover the truth for yourself. -- The Sum-total ENTJ |
