Category: ISTp Statistics Theory
How come every profile I read about ISTPs says they make up anywhere from 5-10% of the population, but whenever I see any sort of statistics on the net, they are always one of the least represented types? I know, I know...Its the internet. But they're introverts that like tools (computers possibly) so I would think they'd be just as prone to surfing the net and being interested in Socionics. -- Anonymous

A1 You have to be careful with the type distribution statistics, especially the one that is based on "total population". Firstly, there is no reliable psychometric instrument of today that can stand up to such a challenge. Secondly, if statistics is not accompanied by the fact sheet on how, where and when it was gathered, it has no scientific value. Another problem with measuring "total population" it that it is constantly changing. For example (from World Health Organisation archives): "In 1985, the crude birth rate was 26.1 per thousand, and the crude death rate 7.5/1000." From the UN archives: World Population, Medium variant, 1985 - 4 830 979 thousands. So, total births for 1985: 4830979 x 26.1 = 126088551.9. Total deaths for 1985: 4830979 x 7.5 = 36232342.5. Total births and deaths for 1985 together: 36232342.5 + 126088551.9 = 162320894.4 or 162320.8944 thousands, which is about 3.36% of the world population in the year 1985. This means that there was 3.36% shift in "total population" type statistics. What were the types of people who died that year, and what are the types of people who was born that year? In order for this statistics to work you need to measure "total population" every year, which is not possible for technical reasons. Hence, no comment on the data in your report. However, the internet is a virtual world. All the space you can get is on the hard drives. Lack of an S (real physical sensations) makes it an N thing, therefore more attractive to N types. Since there is no way to verify exactly the ratio between N and S internet users, one can only speculate that there are slightly more N users than S, which could explain the phenomena you have encountered. -- Admin
A2 ISTPs tend to not be interested in personality theory - thus most statistics that use distributions of types that participated, you will find the ISTP type underrepresented simply because they don't actively participate in this type of endeavor. -- M Liu
A3 "you will find the ISTP type underrepresented simply because they don't actively participate in this type of endeavor." yup.. we're skeptics.. we read.. we don't post.. & ppl think we're uninterested.. -- Anonymous
A4 ISTPs are smart but they have no interest in the ENDLESS theoretical coversations, but some of the best sex I have ever had has been with ISTPs and we tend to get along pretty well. VANICE -- Anonymous
A5 my untested hypothesis: because ISTps are very practical people. they will be interested if they are presently looking to understand themselves or can at the moment see the value in learning something like socionics, but they're not interested in the theoretical conjecturing behind it - and personality theory is decidedly more theory than hard, proven facts. intuitives are more interested in, and tolerant of, discussing ideas without paying any regard to any apparent purpose or outcome. plus, ISTps don't stick around chatting for its own sake either, so they're not likely to be in forums for companionship's sake. plus, even if ISTps read and are interested, it's less likely they will *participate*. -- Kirana
A6 -STP types like myself get bored, (or lost)when it comes to theoretical discusions. i personally see it as a tool that allows me to read people using observable traits that to me appear to be more factual than theoretical. the fact that type theory may be just theory doesn't matter if it appears factual to me. -- -STP
A7 A3 hit the nail on the head. We like to read and observe and will only participate if it fulfills our practicality. I haven't looked yet, but I bet you will not find many ISTPs responding to the Q&A of the other 15 personlity types. I personally find MBTI and socionics fascinating and I'm always trying to get other people to tell me their personality types so I can run back to socionics and run the relationship calculator. It has really helped me understand how I relate to certain individuals. -- an ISTP
A8 I agree with A6 & A7. The theory part is something to play with, not "buy into" for us! -- iAnnAu
A9 I like to think I can do most things - ie theory and practice but in reality I guess i'm more good in-at that practice (I do lots of physical things which maybe actually leaves me to want to satisfy my theory side .. Mmm!) But nonetheless, I have no choice but to agree with esteemed Vanice, A4, I am great in bed! -- Cyclops

A10 Agreed with A4. My girlfriend and I are both ISTp, and I'll just put it out there that the sex life is unbelievable. -- Anonymous
A11 My brother is an ISTp and he does seem to be interested in new ideas (he would wonder about and ask for more of an explanation if I told him he is an ISTp, for example) but he would also quickly move on to something else that captured his interest. ISTps seem to enjoy being around people and I think a lot of people unconsciously equate "introverted" with solitude, which does not describe ISTps' behavior well in my view. And to answer the original question, could many ISTps actually believe they are extraverted? The outward behavior would often be classified as 'E'. -- econdude
