P stands for Phenomenon
by Sergei Ganin
If you normally decide on someone's type by going - E or I?, S or N?, F or T?, J or P?, then you MUST know this: P types have a misleading habit of showing off their J capabilities to new people. I wonder if this is something P types do without realising they are doing it or they really have a "sinister" plan in ... mind. In any case there is always a show off period, which fades away gradually as P types become more familiar with you. Of course, lots of what's been said depends on a person, but this pattern keeps popping up persistently.
At the beginning P types do what they say they would and keep their promises and come on time and show that they can be trusted, etc. They do it in incredibly believable way, if you don't know that you've got a P type in front of you, you would never question their trustworthiness.
Then time passes and they slip. First they slip just a bit, tiny little bit just to check how you would react to that. There is always an excuse, ALWAYS! Then they do it a bit more, and a bit more, and gradually as they feel they know you better, they let it go and before you know it all turns into one huge P mess. Endless excuses, poor time management, broken promises, unfulfilled contracts, cancelled jobs - you name it! This is the time when you really should start deciding on J/P bit, unlike the E/I bit that is more obvious at the first contact. So here is the rule:
E/I - the first preference in the type acronym - should be decided upon first, while the impression from the first contact is still fresh.
j/p - the last preference in the type acronym - should be decided upon last, after the first "run into" impression has settled and you begin to see the real McCoy.
And here is the graph to illustrate the above rule:

C30 I don't think this is true for all types. All the ENTps I know are very straightforward about their ability to forget or be late. Someone mentioned Ips are more like this, and for myself, I think I can see where it is true. The reason I am most reliable and produce the best work in the beginning of a job/class is because it is new and exciting and some personality types, like mine, love novelty. Once I get used to the job my work becomes sloppier. Sometimes I will have motivation to have a burst of being better about it or something, but mostly I'm back to my normal P self. I also note someone describing Ps as having bursts of genius, and that is very true as well. Also, I think though Ps have tendencies to be late or unreliable, it doesn't define the letter. I am on almost always on time, and I have systems for remembering things because I know I can forget. When typing someone, I have a hard time knowing if they are J or P most of the time and I figure it out by reading descriptions of both types and deciding what fits best. I think it has a lot more to do with how their brain works, which is why people who are both J/P tend to be more compatible - their brains are on the same frequencies. You have to look at that as opposed to the tendancies that the letter leads to. I wonder if there is a correlation between J/P and Left brain/Right brain? -- INFp |
C31 Great article and i do agree with most of your theory SG ! However 2 things come to my mind: 1 - As far as i am concerned there is no sinister agenda making me slack off from "artificial" J to my more "natural" P, the reason i think is that whatever environment i am exercing my Jness on loses its charm on me... What i mean is that as an INTP i adapt so much to my environment that in a way i go beyond it and by doing so i manage to detect all its flaws and contradictions ! Therefore i lose hope and faith realizing that environment is resisting change / evolution ! So in the end, i go back to Pness and for an outside observer ii may appear as lazy and forgetful ! 2 - According to your theory (i agree with) someone who may show absolute Jness at first, will be in fact a relative P which will be shown over time... Howevet following the same theory i guess we can inverse it and claim accordingly that someone showing relative / open minded Pness at first will show over time his absolute Jness... So if, over time, what may appear as an abolute J will in fact display relative P traits, what may appear as a relative P will in fact display absolute J traits ! It is a clear case of enantiodromia... What do you think ? -- Anonymous |
C32 J = determination (transcendent left brain) P = indetermination (immanent right brain) J + P = self-determination (synthesis between left brain and right brain) -- Anonymous |
C33 So, if you're a P-henominal MBTI P type j-uxtaposed w/ socionics j type, THEN what's your normal pattern (other than the probability of also being I-ntroverted)? Because I certainly have some notorious P [what appears to be] disorganized appearances combined with j systematic/methodical approaches once I get going. I'm considered to be the most consistently punctual person in my family, yet am notoriously bad when it comes to losing track of time. (I calculate how much time I 'need' beforehand, then set a corresponding alarm so that I can leave 'on time', or early...just in case I would otherwise lose myself in thought and/or the activity of interest.) I never like to make promises P-rimarily b/c of a certain aspect of my P-ness, but am always a man of my word when I have j-ust reason to make one to another. -- Soc INTj, MBTI INTP, SLOAN rcoei, Enne 5w4 |
